Attwood Marshall Lawyers’ Family Law Associate, Laura Dolan was invited to speak to retirement investing digital platform, The Golden Times for their article, “How to avoid late-life financial threats to your wealth, welfare.”
Laura spoke to reporter, Duncan Hughes about the case of a Sydney widow, Florencia Baldwin, who was at risk of legal fees of more than $400,000 over a fight with her de facto partner’s children about whether she could remain in the family’s Sydney apartment. This case highlights the growing late-life financial risks many retirees face.
Ms Baldwin risked spending a large portion of her expected inheritance from her late de facto partner on legal fees—just to secure the right to live out her days in a seaside home at Pindimar, about 200 kilometres north of Sydney, in which she had been granted a life interest.
Laura explained disputes of this nature often arise where there is an informal or verbal agreement.
