How to protect yourself

Identity

Keep your personal and financial details to yourself. Never share your details with an unverified source or if you believe your communications have been compromised.

Be Cautious

Do not open suspicious emails or attachments. Be cautious of emails that push a sense of urgency or rush you in anyway.

Passwords

Use unique passwords. Do not use the same password for different logins. Never share your passwords.

Phishing is one of the most common scams.

Have you received a message with content such as…

You have won something!

A message of urgency!

Asking for personal details

These types of messages are called Phishing.

If something sounds too good to be true – it probably is!

These types of scams try and trick you into giving out important information, such as credit card details, passwords and banking details. Cyber fraud and scams can affect anyone. There are many ways that a scammer can attempt to impersonate a legitimate business or individual.

Always question suspicious messages or emails. If you are unsure, stop and check if the message is from a genuine account.

Call the business or person on the number they originally gave you at the beginning of your dealings with them to confirm if the email you have received is legitimate (beware of fraudulent contact numbers in emails).
