Compensation Law Senior Associate, Henry Garrett, was invited 4BC Afternoons to discuss the recent spate of e-bike injuries and deaths.
Henry explained to presenter, Carla Bignasca that Queensland’s current laws have not kept pace with the rapid rise of e-bikes and e-scooters, creating significant uncertainty around safety, liability and enforcement.
He explained that the devices often fall into a legal grey area, with unclear rules about who can ride them, what speeds are allowed and whether they qualify as vehicles under existing legislation. Henry said clearer regulation, restricted registration and compulsory insurance are urgently needed to ensure that both riders and pedestrians are properly protected, and that victims of accidents have access to fair compensation.
