Attwood Marshall Lawyers Caulfield Cup Raceday at Gold Coast Turf Club, Saturday 19th October 2024

Reading time: 6 minutes

This year marks the 12th anniversary of Attwood Marshall Lawyers proudly sponsoring the Gold Coast Turf Club’s Caulfield Cup event at Aquis Park. In more recent years, with the advent of the Everest Race at Royal Randwick Course in Sydney, the two major racing events on the same day make this a very special event at the recently redeveloped Gold Coast Turf Club track at Bundall on the Gold Coast.

Attwood Marshall Lawyers is excited for the day and will be watching the eight local races from the corporate suites at the Gold Coast Turf Club, as well as keeping our eyes glued to the screens for the live-streamed interstate races. Although the firm has been involved in sponsoring events with the turf club for more than 20 years, our current Caufield Cup Race Day traces back to the inaugural Attwood Marshall Lawyers GCTC Caufield Cup race day held in 2012 when ‘Dunaden’, ridden by champion jockey Craig Williams triumphed in the Cup.

As a board member of the Gold Coast Turf Club from 2009-2014, Attwood Marshall Lawyers’ Legal Practice Director, Jeff Garrett said, “It’s a privilege to be part of an event that brings joy to so many and highlights the dedication of the racing community. It is a traditional spring carnival group one racing event and one of the most famous races on the Australian racing calendar.”

As an organisation with a shared interest and passion for the racing industry and a department dedicated to equine law and thoroughbred breeding and racing matters, our sponsorship of the Gold Coast Turf Club’s Caulfield Cup Race Day is welcomed by Gold Coast Turf Club CEO Steve Lines.

“The Gold Coast Turf club is delighted that Attwood Marshall Lawyers is joining us again this year for their annual sponsorship of the Caulfield Cup. We appreciate the loyal support from an organisation that the club has held an association with for over 20 years. It’s wonderful to welcome back Attwood Marshall Lawyers’ Legal Practice Director, Jeff Garrett, who was a board member at the Turf Club from 2009-2014,” said Lines.

The time-honoured $5M Caulfield Cup is one of the biggest races on the Melbourne Spring racing calendar and is run at the historic Caulfield Racecourse, also known as ‘The Heath’.

Caulfield Cup, which was first run in 1879 at Caulfield Racecourse, is a crucial steppingstone for horses aiming to compete in the running of the Melbourne Cup over 3,200 metres on 5 November.

Run over 2,400 metres, the $5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup is the most lucrative turf race of that distance. Its prestige and popularity are only matched by the Melbourne Cup.

How horses perform at the Caulfield Cup has historically proven to be a great indication of the horse’s chances in the Melbourne Cup. There are many famous horses who have won the revered Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double, the most recent of which was last year with champion race horse ‘Without a Fight’ ridden by champion jockey Mark Zahra. ‘Without a Fight’ was the first horse to achieve the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double since ‘Ethereal’ who won the double in 2001 under the guidance of local jockey Scott Seamer and trained by Sheila Laxon.

‘Let’s Elope’ (1991), ‘Doriemus’ (1995), and ‘Might and Power’ (1997) are more famous recent winners of the ‘Cups double’ that will be well-known to punters.

This is a classic distance race over a mile and a half that always attracts the best stayers in the industry, from around Australia and abroad.

Caulfield Cup Tips

As we approach race day, here are Attwood Marshall Lawyers Legal Practice Director Jeff Garrett’s tips for the day: In a race that has been criticised by the so-called experts as being one of the weakest races in recent history, my tips for the cup tomorrow are:

  • Number 15 ‘Deny Knowledge’ – This mare by form stallion Pride of Dubai trained by the Freedman brothers and piloted by jockey Craig Newitt is a great each way bet. Currently paying $14 per recent win; showed her determination and class. At the lower weights, she is an excellent lightweight chance;
  • Number 13 ‘Zardozi’ – Another lightweight chance who is well in the market at $8 and trained by grandson of the legendary Bart Cummings. Needs a bit of luck from barrier 12, but should be in the mix at the end;
  • Number 7 ‘Eliyass’ – Another horse well in the market at $6.50 and trained by Gaye Waterhouse. Also well in the weights at 53kgs, certainly one to add to your multiples;
  • Number 8 ‘Land Legend’ – Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by champion jockey Zach Purtin, the Galileo side stayer has good form and should be in the mix at $8; and;
  • Number 2 ‘Buckaroo’ – The Chris Waller trained favourite to be ridden by “Magic Man” Joe Moreira is the current race favourite and cannot be left out of trifectas. The query over the distance but also well weighted at 54.5kgs.

The Everest Tips

    • Number 12 ‘Bella Nipotina’
    • Number 10 ‘Private Eye’
    • Number 1 ‘I am Me’
    • Number 6 ‘Stefi Magnetica’

    What’s the latest on development at the Gold Coast Turf Club?

    The new course proper track has now been completed and the night racing lights have also been installed. All of this is intended for future racing events at the Gold Coast Turf Club and should lead to an expansion of the metropolitan events held locally.
