Attwood Marshall Lawyers is pleased to announce that Commercial Litigation Senior Associate and NSW Law Society Accredited Specialist in Dispute Resolution, Charles Lethbridge, has been promoted to Partner status.

Firm Appoints New Partner

Having been with the firm since 2015, Charles has helped grow the Commercial Litigation department and hone the firm’s specialist services in this growing, diverse and everchanging area of law.

Although litigation can be a last resort, there has been a significant rise in the need for reputable and skilled litigation lawyers throughout Australia that practice exclusively in commercial litigation and dispute resolution. With taking matters to Court being a time-consuming, costly, and stressful process, attempting alternative dispute resolution options first is critical. The need for experts in this field is only increasing in the COVID era, with commercial litigation and class actions erupting during this time.

Charles’ extensive knowledge and experience in this complex area of law, combined with his strong negotiation skills, allows him to resolve the majority of his client’s disputes quickly and effectively through alternative dispute resolution strategies.

He has been recognised by his peers as an exceptional strategist, a fierce client advocate, and litigator with close to 18 years’ experience over a broad commercial litigation practice with a particular focus on disputes in the property, construction, business and commercial, insolvency, banking, and insurance industries.  The completion of his Law Society specialist accreditation in Dispute Resolution is testament to Charles’ knowledge and experience in this complex area of law. Only a small percentage of the profession complete their accreditation and the ‘fail rate’ is high.

His dedication and approach to his work has helped cement the firm as a leading provider of commercial litigation and dispute resolution services.

Charles is excited to become a Partner at Attwood Marshall Lawyers, and to continue to develop the department, currently consisting of a team of 7 lawyers and paralegals who practice exclusively in commercial litigation and dispute resolution.

“It’s a great honour to be elevated to partner of this remarkable firm. Attwood Marshall Lawyers is the premier firm on the Coast, one of the oldest firms in the country and an industry leader in innovation. I grew up watching my father, as a lawyer, couped up in an office with his head in hard copy files, and being a lover of the outdoors, I couldn’t have thought of anything worse at a young age. I obtained a business degree and travelled the world before realizing my calling to the law – advocating hard for clients is something that comes very naturally to me and I love what I do. Reaching partner has been a goal since commencing my articles in 2004 and it’s a very satisfying experience to reach that goal,” explained Charles.

Charles is located at our Coolangatta office, however, is available to take appointments at all our office locations including Robina Town Centre, Kingscliff, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

On behalf of all partners and staff, we congratulate Charles on his promotion.

This brings the number of partners at Attwood Marshall Lawyers to five with Charles joining Legal Practice Director, Jeff Garrett, Property & Commercial Partner Barry van Heerden, Wills & Estates Partner Angela Harry, and Personal Injuries Partner, Jeremy Roche. Each of the partners head up their respective departments and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the firm.

Legal Practice Director, Jeff Garrett congratulates Charles on the promotion to Partner and is excited to have Charles on board in the firm at Partner level.

“It is great to see a young man progress through the firm here and become a Partner. Charles is a dedicated lawyer and contributes to the culture of our business through his mentoring of younger lawyers, graduates, and paralegals. His specialist accreditation puts him at the pinnacle of his peers in this very competitive area of law and we are very proud to have Charles heading up our litigation team. Quite apart from all of that, he is also a very kind, genuine, and decent person behind the tough façade of the consummate litigation lawyer” said Mr Garrett.

Charles’ Background

Initially from Brisbane, Charles spent much of his youth on the Gold Coast and now resides here with his family.

During his upbringing, Charles spent a lot of time at his father’s reputable law firm, Lethbridge & Munro, in Toowong, Brisbane, where he was able to observe and assist the business. From being the office cleaner and chief archives filer in his early teens through to later commencing his articled clerkship for 4 years with his father, Charles was able to gain valuable experience and insight into the legal profession.

Charles’ father (Mac) had a very strong work ethic and that was passed on to Charles, as was Mac’s innate ability to connect with people. Both these character traits became enormously helpful in practising in litigation and dispute resolution.

Having obtained a Bachelor of Business degree in 2001, a Bachelor of Laws in 2007, he was then admitted to the legal profession as a Solicitor in 2008.

Charles has acted for a range of clients including Australian banks, international banks, publicly listed companies, government agencies, and private companies and individuals.

Charles worked at both boutique and mid-tier firms in Sydney and Brisbane prior to joining Attwood Marshall Lawyers in 2015 and has practiced in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. He has run matters in a range of jurisdictions including the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and Queensland, the Federal Court, the Courts of Appeal, the High Court and the Land and Environment Court of NSW. He has successfully run class actions including a complex building defect class action against a major developer and others against listed companies and has had numerous matters before the High Court of Australia.
