Laura Dolan is a compassionate and diligent Family Law Associate.

Having graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business, majoring in Management, Laura joined the Attwood Marshall Lawyers Family Law team in 2020.

Laura holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law and is admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of Queensland as well as the High Court of Australia.

A career in law appealed to Laura as she likes the complexity and problem-solving side to helping people. She came to Attwood Marshall Lawyers with experience in commercial dispute resolution and property law, but quickly developed a real passion for family law.

Whereas other practice areas can be more transactional in nature, she finds that family law is all about helping people through what may be one of the most emotional and stressful times in their lives.

She takes a practical and compassionate approach to her practice and tries to resolve matters as early as possible through mediation, family dispute resolution or conciliation. When litigation cannot be avoided, she guides clients through the court process with steadiness and care. She offers tailored, practical advice to protect their interests and deliver constructive results.

At Attwood Marshall Lawyers, she has built up specialist knowledge in divorce, property matters, financial agreements, parenting disputes and surrogacy law.

Surrogacy law is an evolving area of law that she finds particularly rewarding, as she supports clients through their journey to grow their families, advising them on their legal rights and the processes involved for both pre-conception and post-birth parentage orders.

How to avoid late-life financial threats to your wealth, welfare

Family Law Associate, Laura Dolan was invited to speak to retirement investing digital platform, The Golden Times for their article, “How to avoid late-life financial threats to your wealth, welfare.”

Laura spoke to reporter, Duncan Hughes about the case of a Sydney widow, Florencia Baldwin, who was at risk of legal fees of more than $400,000 over a fight with her de facto partner’s children about whether she could remain in the family’s Sydney apartment. This case highlights the growing late-life financial risks many retirees face.

Ms Baldwin risked spending a large portion of her expected inheritance from her late de facto partner on legal fees—just to secure the right to live out her days in a seaside home at Pindimar, about 200 kilometres north of Sydney, in which she had been granted a life interest.

Laura explained disputes of this nature often arise where there is an informal or verbal agreement.
