Attwood Marshall Lawyers welcomes Law Graduate Mieke Elzer to the firm’s Property and Commercial team

News

We are pleased to welcome Mieke Elzer to the firm to join our growing property and commercial department.  Mieke joins us at a time when the property market continues to boom, and our team further expands to service the increasing demand in this sector, announces Attwood Marshall Lawyers Legal Practice Director Jeff Garrett.

Meet Mieke Elzer

Mieke grew up on the Northern beaches of Coffs Harbour.  A true “surfy chick” at heart, you can find her surfing, spending time in nature with her children, dancing, and singing in her spare time.  She also enjoys sitting and yarning with Aboriginal Peoples and learning about their culture and history.  She has been learning the Aboriginal Gumbaynggirr language for over a decade.

Mieke recently graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science Major in Government Policy Studies and Bachelor of Law with First Class Honours at Southern Cross University (SCU).  During the last seven years, she has obtained experience in several areas of law, including property, commercial, criminal, family law, wills and estates, debt recovery, and personal injury Brisbane.

Mieke aims to have her honours thesis entitled ‘Ecological Jurisprudence in the Bellingen Shire’ published in a law journal this year.  During her studies at SCU, she was awarded several academic awards, including:

  • Lexis Nexis On-Line Legal Research Package Prize for the most outstanding student in the units Australian Criminal Law
  • Law Society of NSW Professional conduct Prize for the undergraduate Bachelor of Laws statant who received the highest mark in Professional Conduct
  • Highest overall mark in Corporations Law

Her graduation ceremony is imminent, and she is hopeful to be awarded a University Medal.

Mieke will be a valuable member of our property and commercial team, and she aims to provide Attwood Marshall Lawyer’s clients with clear information and solutions for their legal questions in a timely and friendly manner.  She values listening to clients’ wants and needs and having an extensive knowledge of the law to strongly advocate for her clients in everything she does. She employs a personal approach and prides herself on her ability to act with integrity under pressure.

Mieke is passionate about an emerging area of law known as ‘earth law’.  Drawing on Indigenous worldviews, earth law envisages our legal system from an earth-connected perspective rather than a human-centered perspective, particularly our property and environmental law frameworks.  She aims to build on her honours research by embarking on a PhD sometime in the next 5-10 years.  Mieke hopes to eventually be able to use this research alongside her knowledge of property, corporate, and commercial law to be able to help facilitate the shift away from the current environmental/development law paradigm towards business practices and legal systems that honour the inherent rights of nature to exist and flourish.

Mieke will be working with our property lawyers, predominantly in NSW conveyancing matters, which is her area of most experience. The ongoing property boom in northern NSW will ensure Mieke has plenty of work to do in this area! Mieke will be a welcome addition to the team while she completes her practical legal training before admission in the Supreme Court of NSW as a legal practitioner later this year.
