Attwood Marshall Lawyers will be represented at the golf day by Compensation Lawyer and Associate Henry Garrett and Litigation Lawyer Tim Wright, showing our support for the charity and participating in this wonderful event supporting a very deserving local charity. There are many retired rugby league players in the Tweed/Gold Coast/Brisbane area, with many former NRL and Brisbane and Sydney competition A grade players who ended their careers here by playing and coaching local teams in the Gold Coast/Group 18 competitions. The area is also a nursery for rugby league in general with the advent of the Brisbane Broncos, the Gold Coast Titans, and lately the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Men of League to Family of League
In November 2022, the Men of League Foundation underwent a rebrand, now known as Family of League, which is rugby league’s leading charity.
The rebrand was implemented to reflect the valuable work the independent grassroots charity does for all members of the rugby league community, not just men.
Mateship and teamwork have been the cornerstones of rugby league since its commencement as a spin-off from rugby union in the early 1900’s, and the Family of League Foundation grew from the realisation that these qualities could be harnessed to serve those who needed help during and after their playing days. The charity has been proudly giving back to the community for over 20 years.
The Foundation was established in 2002 by Ron Coote, Jim Hall and Max Brown. The three men identified the urgent need to establish a network that accessed the tight-knit rugby league community’s desire to help their own.
No matter the role someone plays within the league community, whether they are a former player, an administrator, referee, or volunteer, the foundation protects and enhances the lives of the community while respecting everyone’s dignity.
The vision for the Family of League Foundation is to provide a range of wellbeing support and referrals in a professional and timely manner to those within the rugby league community, including:
- Providing assistance to those who have undergone surgery and require rehabilitation
- Helping those in need of equipment and specialist care
- Providing wellbeing visits to homes and hospitals
- Helping anyone suffering from social isolation
- Promoting mental health
The Family of League Foundation boasts a robust membership and an Australia-wide network of committees that are the engine room of the Foundation.
Attwood Marshall Lawyers – proud to support and serve our community
Attwood Marshall Lawyers have actively sponsored junior and senior rugby league teams across Northern New South Wales and the Gold Coast for many years, including the Bilambil Terranora Junior Jets, Murwillumbah Colts Juniors, Mudgeeraba Redbacks Juniors, and Southport Tigers. We are proud to be associated with the Family of League Foundation and help them raise vital funds for the work they do giving back to the rugby league community and their families.
With many rugby league enthusiasts within the firm, it comes as no surprise that this is a charity close to our hearts. Legal Practice Director Jeff Garrett is a former Gold Coast A Grade competition player and was fortunate enough to captain the 1986 Southport Tigers A Grade premiership team, who went on to win 3 premierships in a row. Jeff also represented the Gold Coast Vikings representative side and played in the QLD State League competition for several years. Jeff and his younger brothers played for Southport Tigers for many years, with youngest brother Paul also playing A grade and making many representative sides, including the Under 17 Queensland side, who played the curtain raiser to the State of Origin match at Lang Park. Paul also played A grade at Wynnum Manly in the Brisbane competition.
Jeff later became involved in the Mudgeeraba Redbacks Junior Rugby League Club when his son, Henry Garrett (now one of Attwood Marshall Lawyers’ Compensation Law Associates) commenced playing in the under 9’s. Soon after Jeff began coaching juniors at the Redbacks, eventually obtaining his Level 2 Coaching Certificate and becoming the Coaching Director of the Mudgeeraba Redbacks Club. He coached the Under 15 and Under 17 Division 1 sides to premierships until hanging up the coaching boots in 2002 to concentrate on the running of Attwood Marshall Lawyers.
Henry also played under 19’s for Southport Tigers and more recently A Grade for Mudgeeraba Redbacks. Henry has retired from playing rugby league in exchange for running triathlons and recently competed in the Kingscliff Triathlon.
Attwood Marshall Lawyers looks forward to continuing a long-term relationship with the Family of League Foundation to support the rugby league community.
